tug of war

A contest of strength in which two teams tug on opposite ends of a rope, each trying to pull the other across a dividing line.

Also called tug o' war, tug war, or rope pulling.

halter

A rope or leather strap put round the head of a horse or a dog for leading or fastening it.

hangman's noose

The hangman's noose or knot is used by a hangman to execute persons who have been condemned to death by hanging.

The noose is a a loop formed in a rope by means of a slipknot so that it binds tighter as the rope is pulled.

A variation of this knot is used in fishing and is called the Uni-knot.

jump rope

Children's game in which players hold a jump rope at each end and twirl it in a circle, while one or more players jump over it each time it reaches its lowest point.

Jumping rope is an activity that is not only for competition or recreation, but for a cardiovascular workout, just like jogging or bicycle riding.

Also called skipping rope or skip rope.
